The Genocide Memorial in Kigali graphically depicts the devastation of the genocide, telling stories of how men, women, children and babies were murdered and tortured. Justin was given the opportunity to meet the widows and orphans and heard their personal survival stories. It made him wonder how they have the strength and courage to move on with their lives when they were left with nothing at all. Their faith and belief in God is remarkable and inspiring. Mark and Darlene Zschech from Hillsong Church, Sydney, launched Hope Rwanda: 100 Days of Hope, a global effort designed to bring hope to a nation seemingly forgotten by the world. With the assistance of individuals, volunteers, organisations and governments there are many ongoing projects helping restore Rwanda and its people. One of which is the Village of Hope, a self-sustaining, holistic model providing the complete needs of the child, widow and the community. During my short stay in Rwanda we helped build houses for the Village of Hope. Being able to physically improve the community was incredibly satisfying because it meant so much to so many people. Hope Rwanda aren’t simply providing a roof over peoples heads, they’re building homes and creating new families. A widow will move in to a house along with 4 – 5 orphans to raise as her own, giving them the opportunity to have a family again. Hope Rwanda has empowered me to want to make a difference to a country devastated by war, genocide and poverty. By sharing my experience with you, I hope I have made you more aware of the devastating aftereffects of the 1994 genocide. And more importantly I hope I have inspired you to help. ![]() |
